DECISIONS / DISCUSSIONS

+ The primary goal of this meeting was to start the conversation about the vision and goals for the project. We discussed the current dreams for the program, which include the following:

MAIN LEVEL
- two bedrooms with connected baths, great room with hearth, kitchen and living room, back deck connected to great room with view of lake, cozy loft above main space

LOWER LEVEL
- bunk room with up to 4 bunks, storage area, laundry room, wet transition room w/ showers, sauna, patio

LAKESIDE DECK
- platform for sleeping / sitting by the fire / yoga, fire place or fire pit, built-in grill / cooking area

+ The vision for this cabin is that it is a quiet gathering place for the Smiths to rest and entertain. It's important that it not be fussy or overly high maintenance. We discussed using more industrial materials, such as concrete, to reduce the need for constant upkeep. The cabin should suit its wooded, rustic environment with its material selections and overall feel.

+ Regarding utilities and services - the cabin will need a septic tank, well, and tankless water heater.

+ Due to the proximity to the neighbor's property line, screening elements and/or thoughtful site placement will be necessary to maximize privacy.

+ The sloped path down the lake will need steps. We build a set of "temporary" steps before the final stairway is constructed.

DECISIONS / DISCUSSIONS

+ We discussed the schematic plans and massing models Leana put together, and came to several design decisions:

SITE DESIGN
- "Option 3" is currently the preferred location for the cabin. It may shift depending on driveway placement. The lakeside deck will be located closer to the lake, and a trail will be designed to connect the two.
- If possible, the carport/garage will be designed to be built into the hillside (batcave)

FLOOR PLANS
- Increase the width of the bedrooms so that bed can be more centered in the room.
- Add a partition wall in the bunk room downstairs to add privacy and the option of a third bunk.
- Fireplace will be gas, not wood-burning. TV will likely be placed above.
- Discussed the possibility of having the wet room double as a tornado safe room (may depend on cost)

EXTERIOR
- Concrete block is preferred over poured in place concrete - especially if it is less expensive.
- Material options will be looked at next, but we discussed the possibility of using a galvanized aluminum for the siding.

TO-DO ITEMS

+ Smiths - contact contractor
+ Leana - make the plan changes we discussed and begin designing the driveway layout, carport, and lakeside deck.
